Kayaking Tybee Island

The Outdoor Inn is located on Tybee Island within easy walking or biking distance from restaurants, shops, attractions and quiet streets perfect for families. Of course The Outdoor Inn is perhaps best known for those who enjoy kayaking as we back right up to a marsh with access to the Back River and beyond. Even better, we're right next door to Sea Kayak Georgia, where you can rent kayaks if you don't have your own, take lessons or just venture out on a guided tour. You should also check out our friends at Savannah Canoe and Kayak.

Tybee Island is a kayaker's paradise, with easy access to the Back River, ocean launching, dolphin watching, marshpaddling and the "Triangle" for kayak surfing, made famous in the This is the Sea DVD. The Outdoor Inn is well suited for kayakers, with plenty of space in the back yard for washing off kayaks and gear, and outdoor showers to rinse off the sand and salt water.Egret photo

Tybee Island attractions of particular note include:

The Cockspur Island Light -- Built in 1857 on an oyster bed foundation, the light is one of several that marks the entrance to the Savannah River channel.

Fort Pulaski National Monument -- Located two miles before you get to Tybee Island proper, the fort was built starting in 1829 as means of guarding the approach to Savannah. Today it is surrounded by beautiful marshes and visitors can view the huge walls, two moats and a wide drawbridge. The fort offers self-guided tours and other activities. Tybee Island Light Station -- For more than 270 years the Tybee Island Light Station has guided mariners searching for the Savannah River entrance. Today the light is one of the most intact in America. It is within biking distance of The Outdoor Inn.

Coastal Journeys -- Island excursions, eco-nature tours, private charters and more on a private boat tour in the beautiful coastal waters surrounding Savannah and Tybee Island.
